Free Bobcat dxf file plans for
a cnc machine or jigsaw puzzle

Welcome to another week of jigsaw wood 3d puzzle making digest(dxf file plans). Today I’m going to share quite an interesting model with you that I build in one day by using my Badog software to trace a picture I found on the internet and then convert it, piece by piece into a puzzle that I could cut with my hobby router that I have in my shop. You can use the DXF files below and then use your home hobby machine or even, if you like, use the old method of printing on a blueprint then cutting the whole project with a scroll saw. I don’t recommend this as the blade must be removed then passed through a hundred times in just the cage sides of the Bobcat model! Anyway here is the finished product:

in order to find this model I had to search the Internet for hours even days. in the end I just decided to take a picture, a simple picture of a front-end loader and superimpose it in the drawing area of my cad software.  Luckily my bundled software allows us to do this quickly and efficiently without any hassle. the problem was it was from a 3-D image and I couldn’t see all around the front-end loader so I had to imagine pieces and look at countless number of images from the Internet.

there’s a picture that used in the software you can see the picture below any the actual CAD drawing on top.  Normally the CAD software I would use many different layers in order to draw every difference square but I elected to place groups of squares instead.  This reduced calculation time and in turn reduced the error of my finished product.

after I completely drew every piece one after another in the CAD software, I adjusted all the fitting parts so they would fit together snugly and I wouldn’t have to sand them or filed down the corners to compensate for the larger tool I was using.  I tried many tools but the one that seems to work the best was the 1.1 mm diameter two toothed mill. I found that the 1 mm mill broke too often and wore down quite quickly.

hear are some pieces already cut and even eventually sprayed with black spray paint. unfortunately I decided to use MDF which doesn’t paint well so I had to put a layer of primer so that the paint with paint didn’t just get absorbed into the material. you can see any image below that where the pieces connect I had cut them and designed them so that we would need to put them together with glue which produced a cleaner end model. normally 3-D puzzles have tangs that stick out which makes them look ugly. I find this way is a lot cleaner but you need clamps and glue and more time to assemble the model.

in order to get the grips for the tires first you cut them all out but when you glued together phase themso that there are gaps that mimic the tire tread. this as another dimension to the 2-D model which makes it more realistic looking.  It’s best to spray paint them before you glue them so that you may surface to glue together.

you can see the seat of the bobcat front-end loader being glued together as I said before the glue takes quite a bit more time than normal jigsaw puzzle so feel free to alter the DXF plans if you would like to simplify your life.

here’s what looks like half put together with the wheels on. because I used a CNC machine, every piece fits together snugly and has no play in between the joints. I couldn’t begin to imagine using a scroll saw or worse a cutter to build this model and I grew up using hand tools and building handmade furniture.  It seems that using a CNC machine although it has a hard learning curve, eventually it made my life a lot easier  and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

Just a little background on this project before I go, this model took me about four hours to do the conception and tracing of the image about 30 minutes to cut out all the pieces with my hobby CNC routera nd about an hour and a half to glue it altogether. it certainly the most complicated 3-D model I’ve done to date, but it’s also the most worthwhile and it looks great sitting on my shelf. thanks for following along and I hope you enjoy the file that you can download for free and use for noncommercial use.  But if you use it drop me a line and let me know or send me some pictures so I can see you’re finished product. I would be interested in seeing somebody make it by hand LOL.
