While its Thursday again in time for another huge undertaking for the weekend you can see the finished product here above but believe me when I started it was nothing more than an idea.  I search to the Internet for small file and I found somebody selling this model above on eBay and I also tracked down on Aliexpress. but instead of buying the model I had used pictures from the Internet and built the model from scratch in the bundled software that came with my CNC machine. the most important thing when you’re thinking of making one of these files is that every piece must fit together perfectly.  All corners must be square so that the 2d model can be easily assembled without too much filing or corrections.  This is where the CNC machine comes into play.

You can see from my previous post that started out with wooden chairs and simple wooden tables, but taking this model is probably the biggest project I’ve ever done and in truth it took a lot longer than I thought because I’m just beginner in a CNC world. I had bought my machine so that I could make projects that this but I wasn’t prepared of how much work it really was and how much knowledge I had to have before I had entered into 3-D design.

This is the first steps of the design process. I decided to start with the chassis because of the most important part and all the pieces attach to it and it serves as the heart of the actual model. the design process took me a little over eight hours total and I pushed through the weekend until Saturday night when I finally finished the design process.  Though somewhat satisfied, i was kind of disappointed that I couldn’t find a better idea for the tires. truth be known, I was tired and I couldn’t think of anything else other than to glue them together ( and forget about it and go to bed).  you can see below the somewhat finished model in a 3-D interface.

After the design process was completed all I had to do was export the DXF files into 2-D drawings projected on the axis of X and Y. you can download these files below and unlike the other DXF files, I have separated each piece strategically on a separate DXF file. This is because as many pieces that are similar to many pieces that are duplicates. also I didn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket and put the entire DXF file on one huge sheet of wood because I am a beginner in the world of CNC machines and I prefer to do one piece at a time because I don’t trust myself. You can see below in the bundled software tool offset for 2 mm diameter tool. This model is quite big and the joints are quite forgiving and in all honesty I didn’t think he would work out to begin and I would have to adjust each piece individually.

You can see here the model for the bucket bottom in black and overlaid in red is the tool path or the trajectory of the CNC machine. I had chosen a high speed of 2000 mm per minute because I was using a 2 mm diameter tool and I was getting very comfortable with the machine lately.

it must take me for days to complete the model working on and off the once machine started cutting and I got to sit back and drink coffee I was quite happy with the results. it kinda gives you a good feeling after four days work to see that what you’ve done is actually becoming real. the wheels were cut with a vibration cutter in the beginning to score the surfaces of the wood with the use the robber to clean up the edges and make square cuts so the pieces would fit together perfectly. as I said before I decide to go the wheel together instead of pushing together because I couldn’t think of how to make the wheel units like a puzzle

After two hours all of the pieces were cut and it was my job to assemble the puzzle together just like I did in a 3-D interface of the software. using a smaller tool came to my advantage when I put the pieces together and I didn’t have to file at all.  it is a nice feeling to have pieces that fit together with no errors without having to stimulate my work before hand.  I must say I’ve mastered the use of the CNC machine and I’m looking forward to the next project which may even be bigger and more complex than this model.

I’m not going to discourage you can tell you how long this project actually took to make a must say it took about a week on and off through frustration. I had even thought halfway through that I would just give up the entire project and forget about it. but because I stuck with that I’m proud of myself and I learn something and I’m happy to share with you so feel free to download a free file just below and remember if you do actually make this stupid front-end loader, send me back the picture because I’m really curious where I stand in my apprenticeship.
